CUHK Biomedical Sciences Programme (BMS) provides students with an integrated and holistic training in biomedical sciences, training leaders with global perspectives for the local, regional and international research, specialists on health system policy and management, and skilled personnel for clinical, pharmaceutical, diagnostics and healthcare settings.

The Information Services Department of the HKSAR Government recently interviewed ๐๐†๐”๐˜๐„๐ ๐“๐ก๐ข ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ฎ ๐€๐ง๐ก, a first-year Biomedical Sciences student from Vietnam and a recipient of this yearโ€™s Belt & Road Scholarship.๐ŸŒŸ Launched by the HKSAR Government in the 2016-17 academic year, the Belt & Road Scholarship aims to attract exceptional students from countries along the Belt & Road Initiative for full-time studies in Hong Kong. Our BMS students have created a revolutionary Fat-Burning Yogurt, and their team โ€œIOSAโ€ proudly brought home a silver medal at the International Genetically Engineered Machine competition (iGEM)! ๐ŸŒŸ This innovative yogurt features two fat-suppressing genes designed to regulate bile acid metabolism, enhance glucose tolerance, reduce appetite, and promote fat burning. It offers a fresh approach to weight loss for those facing obesity challenges. ๐Ÿ’ช โœจMeet our incredible team members๏ผš CHAN Valerie Tanya, DEVINA Vania, HALIM Felicia, LOH Celeste, NG Nok Yiu, PINTO Netaniah Kisha, THIRUVENKADAM Bindhiya, WONG Chun Wing, YAU Lok Ching and ZHUMAGALEYEV Alikhan. ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ‘ Our undergraduate alumni, ๐‘ช๐‘ฏ๐‘ฌ๐‘ต๐‘ฎ ๐’€๐’Š๐’ ๐‘ช๐’‰๐’–๐’ ๐‘ฝ๐’Š๐’๐’„๐’†๐’๐’•, was awarded USD$25,000 Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Ataxia Foundation for his project "Exploring developmental gene expression changes in Spinocerebellar Ataxia 44." ๐Ÿงฌ ๐Ÿ”ฌ Soon after graduating from ๐‚๐”๐‡๐Š ๐๐’๐œ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐ข๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐’๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ฌ in 2021, Vincent pursued his M.Sc. in Clinical and Therapeutic Neuroscience at the University of Oxford, U.K. In October 2022, he embarked on his D.Phil. journey as a student in Prof. Esther Becker's Laboratory at the University of Oxford, delving into the role of metabotropic glutamate receptors in the cerebellum using the latest human-induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) technology and gene editing technology. ๐ŸŽ“ ๐Ÿ’ก Vincent expressed his gratitude for his biomedical sciences background. He said, โ€œI am grateful to have biomedical sciences as my undergraduate degree, which provides a solid foundation for my further studies. The courses in the B.Sc. in Biomedical Sciences Programme have equipped me with the important basic knowledge, facilitating me to pursue postgraduate education focusing on preclinical and clinical studies in neuroscience.โ€œ๐Ÿš€ ๐Ÿ”Vincent's current research project seeks to shed light on the mechanisms underlying abnormal development of nerve cells in the cerebellum, contributing to the progression of Spinocerebellar Ataxia (SCA). SCA is a group of genetic disorders that affect the cerebellum, leading to a progressive decline in motor functions. Traditionally, SCA has been understood as a result of cerebellar degeneration over time. However, recent research suggests that disrupted cerebellar development early in life may also play a crucial role.
