CUHK Biomedical Sciences Programme (BMS) provides students with an integrated and holistic training in biomedical sciences, training leaders with global perspectives for the local, regional and international research, specialists on health system policy and management, and skilled personnel for clinical, pharmaceutical, diagnostics and healthcare settings.

🌟 Become a CUHK Biomedical Sciences Student for a Day! 🌟Last week, the 𝑪𝑌𝑯𝑲-𝑺𝑩𝑺 𝒊𝑮𝑬𝑎 𝑻𝒆𝒂𝒎 hosted the “𝐃𝐍𝐀 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬: 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬-𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐁𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐲 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐀𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩” for 41 high school students from 24 schools across Hong Kong! Students received essential lab skills training and participated in engaging group activities, diving into Fish DNA extraction and amplification using PCR. It was an amazing opportunity to introduce foundational molecular biology techniques. Each participant received a unique souvenir—their very own "𝐌𝐁𝐓𝐈 𝐱 𝐀𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐀𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐬" keychain, created by the team. Throughout the day, students performed DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction, and gel electrophoresis on two fish samples. They also learned how to interpret data and explored bioinformatics tools in DNA barcoding. The highlight was Dr Jacky Yuen’s talk, “Hacking the Code of Life,” where he introduced synthetic biology concepts. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and to the CUHK-SBS iGEM team, along with the dedicated teachers and staff from SBS. From exploring medical genetics and bioinformatics at the School of Biomedical Sciences to hands‑on clinical exposure through our partnership with Hong Kong Children’s Hospital, Athena’s journey blended rigorous training with real-world patient care. Guided by inspiring mentors and a final-year project with Prof. Ellen Poon, she developed practical skills that led her into genetic counselling. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬’ 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬’ 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐊𝐚𝐧𝐲, organized annually by the Faculty of Medicine, was successfully held last Saturday (23 May) at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, CUHK! The association is committed to supporting aspiring clinicians in discovering their potential and developing personalized career paths in 𝗯𝗶𝗌𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 that advance medicine. We are proud to continue this 3-year partnership (following successful collaborations with Prof. Andrew Chan in 2024 and Prof. Hui Zhao in 2025) to support the next generation of clinicians in mastering practical research skills. 💪 🏢 This year, attendees enjoyed an exclusive tour of our core laboratory facilities to see where the magic happens. 🧫 Under the guidance of Prof. Carol Tong, students dived deep into cell culture, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and fluorescence staining. Awardees receive an annual stipend of HK$340,800 and a travel allowance of HK$14,200 for up to three years. 🌏✈ Reflecting on her time at CUHK SBS, Michelle shared that our BSc program enabled her to fulfill her dreams in biomedical research: "The education is world-class, and I was provided with incredible research opportunities as an undergraduate". 🎓 Her journey began with the SUBRA program in Prof. Alfred CHENG’s lab, where she observed cutting-edge immuno-oncology research. By her final year, she had become a core contributor to projects involving drug screening for hepatocellular carcinoma. 🔬 Armed with this hands-on experience, Michelle has now secured direct entry into a PhD program at the University of Hong Kong, where she continues her research in hematopoiesis and stem cell science. 🧬✚ We are incredibly proud of your success, Michelle! It was a phenomenal opportunity to learn directly from leading experts about the program structures, career prospects, and the rapidly evolving landscape of medical genetics! 🔬 Following that, 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐟 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐈𝐏 from SBS led a wonderful Academic CV Writing Workshop on 20 Mar, equipping students with essential skills to stand out in the academic field. 📝 Yesterday, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming 𝐌𝐫 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐔𝐍𝐆, Founder and CEO of 𝐐𝐢 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐋𝐭𝐝. Alvina shared: “It was an honour to assist in the manufacture of CAR-T cells for treating cancer patients. Beyond the lab, participating in the Centre’s Opening Ceremony and exchange trips to Shenzhen and Shanghai were truly inspiring. I’m grateful that my university courses provided a solid foundation, allowing me to apply what I learned in real-world settings.” 🌏 Felicia shared that the internship strengthened her understanding of GMP, CAR-T cell therapy, and the CAR-T manufacturing process, while also introducing her to cleanroom practices and aseptic techniques. 🎓✚𝑚𝒍𝒖𝒎𝒏𝒊 𝑺𝒑𝒐𝒕𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕✚🎓𝐇𝐎 𝐘𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐊 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞 (Class of 2024). Katie began her Biomedical Sciences journey at CUHK in 2019, fuelled by a deep curiosity for science and an openness to wherever it might lead. Through the programme’s multi-disciplinary and comprehensive training, she explored both research and professional pathways. 🔬🌱 In her final year, Katie completed her Capstone Research Project in 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐫 𝐙𝐇𝐎𝐔 𝐉𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠’𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐛, diving into the world of 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐊𝐊𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐲. 🎓✚𝑚𝒍𝒖𝒎𝒏𝒊 𝑺𝒑𝒐𝒕𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕✚🎓𝐇𝐎 𝐘𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐊 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞 (Class of 2024). Katie began her Biomedical Sciences journey at CUHK in 2019, fuelled by a deep curiosity for science and an openness to wherever it might lead. Through the programme’s multi-disciplinary and comprehensive training, she explored both research and professional pathways. 🔬🌱 In her final year, Katie completed her Capstone Research Project in 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐫 𝐙𝐇𝐎𝐔 𝐉𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠’𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐛, diving into the world of 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐊𝐊𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐲.
